Rule of thumb: at 4-bit a model needs about 0.6 GB per billion parameters plus a little for context, and 8-bit (Q8_0) needs about 1.7× as much. So GPT-OSS 20B needs ~13 GB, Llama 3.3 70B ~46 GB, GPT-OSS 120B ~67 GB and Qwen3 235B-A22B ~151 GB. Memory decides whether a model runs; memory bandwidth decides how fast. Memory = weights + 1.5 GB + 5% of weights (~8K context, one user); weights = parameters × bits per weight ÷ 8 (Q4_K_M 4.85 bpw, Q8_0 8.5 bpw). Speeds are our estimates. How we estimate

At 4-bit (Q4_K_M), roughly 0.6 GB per billion parameters plus ~1.5 GB and 5% for ~8K context: ~7 GB for a 9B model, ~19 GB for 27B, ~46 GB for 70B. GPUs leave ~93% of VRAM usable.
About 46 GB at 4-bit and 80 GB at 8-bit. On a Mac or Strix Halo only about 75% of RAM is GPU-usable by default, so 64 GB is a tight fit at 4-bit and 96–128 GB is comfortable.
About 151 GB at 4-bit and 264 GB at 8-bit. Mixture-of-experts models still need memory for all their weights, even though only 22B are read per token. None of the priced rigs we track holds it at 4-bit right now.
No, it needs memory for every parameter, but it runs faster because each token only reads the active ones. GPT-OSS 120B needs ~67 GB but reads only 5.1B parameters per token.
Use a smaller quant (Q3 or lower costs quality), a smaller model, or offload layers to system RAM, which works but is far slower. Long contexts (32K+) need more memory than these figures.
